BETTER THAN LEGO, or the Swiss way of building a house

Jan 10, 2018

When the owner of this house entrusted the project to the architect and designer Ochi, he limited it to just one wish: no built-in furniture, only modern furnishings and art objects.

So the architect chose ultra-modern furniture from the Swiss company USM, which, thanks to its versatility and versatility, combines clean lines with incredible ergonomics and functionality.

"Considering the client's wishes, I chose USM furniture, thus ensuring that the interior will remain relevant for the next 10-20 years!" comments the project's author Ochi. "Unforgettable USM furniture fits perfectly in combination with other interior items. The idea was to do away with the built-in furniture altogether: a high degree of flexibility was decisive in the choice."

The spacious kitchen has a model from the USM Haller collection along the entire wall, which in this case consists of six shelf levels to emphasise the grandeur of the open space. In the centre is a makeshift kitchen island consisting of two movable USM Haller modules, which open up on both sides and thus provide additional comfort and convenience.

USM furniture is a system of components, not individual pieces of furniture. The core piece of furniture is formed by steel tubes, which are connected by patented hinged joints, and the walls of the shelving units are made of sheet steel.

As for this project, one could say that USM furniture would be used without limits (or even fanatically!) if it were not for its visual lightness and harmonious dissolving into space. In fact, we find items by the Swiss factory everywhere: a kitchen unit, a shelving unit in the living room, and chests of drawers in the corridor, laundry room and bathroom. And even toy storage bins in the children's room.

The choice of USM furniture was also based on a monochrome interior: in the large and spacious rooms, the furniture encompasses all shades of white and beige, further enhancing the perception of the space. In smaller rooms, however, such as the bathroom, a bold colour scheme with touches of green, yellow and red has been chosen.

Today, USM employs over 460 people and has partners and representative offices in 40 countries around the world. USM has an international presence with furniture showrooms in Berne, Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Munich, Paris, Stuttgart, Tokyo and New York. The company's New York showroom and corporate offices are located at 28 Green Street in Soho.

New Studio is a partner of the Swiss company USM in Belarus.
