Maison & Objet is one of the most important events on the European design calendar. Professional designers, eager buyers and lovers of beautiful interiors flock to Paris to appreciate the innovations presented at the exhibition. If something unique and striking has emerged in the world - you are sure to find it at Maison & Objet. This year the show was held from 24 to 28 January at the Paris Nord Villipente. There were over 5,000 exhibitors, 6,400 journalists and over 153,000 visitors.

The organisers of Maison & Objet describe the nature of the fair in three words.
Needs: Maison & Objet is a cutting-edge platform that, in line with market developments, finds solutions for your specific needs. Innovation: interior design professionals reveal strategies for effective work, talk about the latest trends and present the latest materials. Vision: the products and services presented are a reflection of the strategic thinking of the best design minds, as well as young and talented emerging designers.

The scale of this international event is such that the highlights can only be picked out after spending a few days at the exhibitors' stands. A special treat for our readers: four trends in Maison & Objet 2014.

Delicate and saturated colours: one of the recurring observations from the show is that the colour palette has become more subtle, more saturated and calmer. Gone are the years of screaming neon bright hues. Velvety indigo blues, lots of grey shades, soft and pale pinks, rich yellows - these colours look set to play an important role in 2014.

Marble, concrete, leather, copper, brass, wood: these materials were heavily represented at the stands of many exhibitors. The combination of different textures and shades, warm and cool surfaces, creates a visual and tactile tension that will definitely be on trend this year.

Indoor plants: a particularly interesting move in interior design is the return of green spaces with indoor plants. Many stands have created entire green walls to highlight the merits of the collections on display and visualise the idea of a stylish home in 2014. Some brands even introduced special pieces of furniture into which living plants have been integrated.

Individuality and play: many exhibitors demonstrated their desire for individuality and play in interior design. Be creative, combine playfully and forget the old, traditional rules, design by trial and error and constantly reinvent your space: this is one of the messages of the new design thinking.
