Baxter and Paola Navone at the Milan Furniture Show
Apr 16, 2014
Grey-green in different shades is the main colour of designer Paola Navone's new collection for the Italian brand Baxter. Jade, malachite, oxidised copper - as always with Baxter, beauty is conveyed through pieces we are already familiar with. They are united by the simplicity of form, natural materials and the meticulous finishing of every detail.
It is interesting to realise that all the pieces in the collection have arrived here after a very long journey and have taken in the life of all the countries they have travelled through. Baxter leather, as always, is the soul of the collection. It undergoes complex processing until it becomes incredibly soft - a secret known only to Baxter.
In the new collection, the leather takes on different shapes and new textures. In one case it is smooth, shiny and supple. In another, it's wrinkled like paper or 'spreadable' like velvet.
The imposing Casablanca sofa, with its pillow-like armrests resembling large ears, is suitable for reading, meditating, taking a nap or just daydreaming. In tandem, the Summer bed resembles a bench and the bench resembles a bed; both are upholstered in leather, which hangs slightly like fabric.

The large Brooklin table has a base of copper tubing and a table top of semi-matt extra-light glass, through which only the shadow of the base can be seen. Perfect for rooms with an informal, 'poetic' atmosphere.

The Stromboli chair seems literally wrapped in wrinkled leather and tied with a rope on the back. The rounded Amburgo Baby chair in glossy, tight leather is a smaller version of the classic Amburgo chair from the previous Baxter collection. The Mama Nepal, on the other hand, is a larger version of the previous Nepal armchair with iron legs and Mongolian llama wool padding.

Together, the collection is a most interesting and natural combination - just as the different things in the house suit the personality of the people who live in it.
