By THE BLUE SEA: An unusual industrial-style project

Jan 16, 2018

This project – a novelty from our Italian partners – is implemented in the port city of Salerno in the south of the Republic.  The flat is located in an old building with windows allowing to enjoy a superb view of the waterfront and is used as a summer home by an Italian family. The couple and their adult children take turns coming here to enjoy the sea breeze and the spectacular views of the bay.

As is often the case, when excited by the idea of redecorating, the owners had no clear idea what they wanted to end up with, and their only wish was for the seaside home to be «different». When they turned to Ghelostudio Architettura for help, a young but already renowned architectural studio, the couple also noted that they envisioned a house (as much as possible) in the style of an urban bourgeois mansion. Thus, on the Tyrrhenian seashore, another design masterpiece was reborn – a new industrial-style loft flat.

The dominant colour scheme – neutral, muted grey and deep black. However, expressive splashes of yellow dilute the interior and bring the warmth of sunlight into the modernist style.

All furniture – made in Italy, and all produced by Italian partner factories New Studio, so we are proud to list them. In the kitchen – Hi-Line VVD set with a suspended hood from Dada, a stunning sliding table Filigree from Molteni, Kobe chairs from Desalto and, of course, Bell bell-shaped lamp from Flos. All together – a cosy and stylish space for joyful and noisy gatherings with lots of friends.

In the open-plan living room, the Lowland sofa from Moroso, another of our partner factories and the undisputed leader in what is now known as designer furniture, takes centre stage. There's also the Mark Table side table from Moroso in contrasting yellow.

The unusual staircase of glass and bent iron – its thin steps are staggered and lead to the second level, where the eye «clings» to another unusual solution. The solid desk top is made of wood and rests on a glass parapet – so that it appears to float in the air.

Attention &ndash again to detail: the storage system and TV stand – these are none other than the Pass-word model by Molteni, personalised by the project architects. And the unusual Serie Haikus bowl for B&B Italia was made by the notorious Marcel Wanders.

The industrial style is underscored by exposed brickwork, uncovered during the renovation and implemented with the careless precision and perfect form that the architects hoped for. The idea is also supported by «cool industrial materials such as glass and metals.

For a couple who decided it was time for a radical change, this flat – a real leap into modern interiors, if only for the duration of the summer holidays. An innate sense of elegance complemented the bold style and gave life to an unusual setting: industrial, but warm, Southern-inspired and welcoming.
