WorkHome, or USM installation as a reflection of erased boundaries in today's world
May 9, 2018
At Salone del Mobile 2018, Swiss furniture brand USM and design studio UNStudio presented a highly original exhibition. The stand was designed according to the idea of HomeWork and was a theatrical installation exploring the shifting boundaries between work and home. "Today, work rules our lives more than ever, and technology allows work to invade our free time," commented the design team on the concept. - "We are like modern nomads who are increasingly mobile, and wherever we are, we are ready to create a workspace. Cafés resemble living rooms, restaurants resemble home kitchens, and co-working spaces have replaced the home office."
UNStudio's creative team was tasked with researching the changes taking place in the world of work, understanding how these changes affect USM office furniture, and identifying new possibilities for the future. As a result, the Swiss factory's stand at the Salone del Mobile was an architecture-scale structure. 1,015 panels, 5,008 beads, 13,318 pipes and 8.9 tonnes of material - an incredibly impressive display. A total of four areas - the dining room, bedroom, bathroom and home office - were created using USM's modular construction.
Over the last few years it has become an obvious fact that automation and artificial intelligence have put us on the path to the elimination of many professions. But UNStudio is convinced: the future is not apocalyptic, so we should focus on finding meaning in our working lives. How can we stimulate our creativity? How can we play with our workspace? How can the office allow us to develop and learn more at work?
